San Francisco-Marin Lawyer Referral and Information Service
Program Overview
Since 1946, the San Francisco-Marin Lawyer Referral and Information Service has provided information and attorney referrals. We are certified by the State Bar of California and a model program of the American Bar Association. Access to justice for all guides our strong public service commitment.
Mission
- To educate as many people as possible about their legal rights
- To give as many people as possible access to affordable, competent legal representation
- To study cultural trends and investigate current social and political realities, in order to identify those most in need of access to our system of justice
- To modify and expand our capabilities and services in order to accomplish the above
Attorney Referral Services for the Public and Businesses
- The SF-Marin LRIS receives over 50,000 inquiries each year
- Referrals are made to insured, vetted attorneys in San Francisco and Marin County or to over 250 legal resource agencies
- 7 trained legal interviewers screen each request for legal assistance
- 7 languages spoken: Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Farsi and French
- Potential clients are referred for an initial 30-minute consultation for $35.00 (free in cases of injury)
- Screening for low–cost and pro bono legal services is performed
Attorney Network
- Over 500 attorneys participate in SF-Marin LRIS
- The average years of practice for our attorneys is 20 years and 22 years for litigation attorneys
- Attorney experience is vetted in over 19 substantive areas of law
- Through the Attorney-to-Attorney Advice Program experienced LRIS attorneys assist less experienced lawyers.
Attorney Qualifications
- Experience qualification standards for membership are among the highest of any certified lawyer referral service in the country
- All attorneys must carry malpractice insurance
- All attorneys must be in good standing with the State Bar of California
- All attorneys must have a confidential office in San Francisco or Marin
- Quality of attorney services is monitored through customer satisfaction surveys
LRIS Court Programs
- Through our Court-Appointment Programs, highly qualified lawyers are readily available for appointment to represent indigent persons in criminal and juvenile delinquency and dependency proceedings, as well as family court. Volunteer “Attorneys of the Day” appear in Immigration Court.
