What is the Military Assistance Program?

The Military Assistance Program (MAP) of the Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) assists military personnel and their families, as well as veterans, with legal services for a reduced fee in a wide variety of civil law practice areas, including family law, landlord/tenant, tax, wills, bankruptcy, consumer matters and more. When you call, trained LRIS staff will briefly interview you about your legal situation to refer you to the appropriately experienced attorney.

Legal referrals through MAP primarily include areas of law and legal situations in which an award of money damages is not possible. Should you have a matter in which monetary damages are a possibility, your matter will be referred to a regular fee, experienced attorney. Our trained legal interviewers can assess which legal field most directly relates to your needs, and whether your matter qualifies for the Military Assistance Program.

Who is eligible?

• All active/reserve military personnel
• Military spouses, domestic partners and children
• Parents of military personnel (if dependents of the military personnel/family)
• Veterans

We will refer you to an experienced attorney!

When LRIS makes a referral you can be assured that the attorney has been screened. The attorney referred to you has met professional experience requirements, carries malpractice insurance and is in good standing with the State Bar of California. In addition, the LRIS conducts ongoing oversight of the attorneys and services provided.
